From geometry files to manufacturing-ready process information.
3MF BIO builds on the 3MF framework to support richer digital workflows for biofabrication. The aim is to connect not only shape data, but also material attributes, process settings and application-relevant metadata in a structured and transferable format.
The collaboration brings together AM Technologies by Brinter, Regsmart and Uppsala University around an open-source framework intended to improve how bioprinting information moves between design, software, equipment and downstream quality workflows.
Linking manufacturing reality with open digital standards.
AM Technologies by Brinter contributes additive manufacturing and bioprinting process expertise so the framework reflects real manufacturing needs, including material handling, printhead and process parameters, equipment interoperability and traceability.
The work supports a stronger digital thread between research data and manufacturing execution instead of leaving critical process information distributed across disconnected files and systems.
Better interoperability, traceability and future regulatory readiness.
A stronger shared data model can reduce friction between design tools, hardware, process development and downstream quality workflows. In bioprinting and other advanced applications, this also supports clearer documentation, reproducibility and earlier consideration of regulatory requirements.
The project aligns closely with the broader transition of additive manufacturing toward richer, standardized manufacturing data rather than geometry-only file exchange.
